News from the Sector – April

News from the Sector is a monthly blog series featuring the latest geological and palaeontological news, jobs, exhibitions, and conferences. Conferences and Events

GCG Member Roy Starkey ran a short presentation followed by a panel discussion What should we do with our collections? Special event on 19th April. The event has been recorded and made available online here . A follow up blog post is upcoming.

Dr Natasha Stephen, the Director of Science & Engagement at the Geological Society, will be giving a Public Lecture: Extra-terrestrial Fieldwork; the adventures of an Earth-bound Astronaut on Friday 5th May. This hybrid event takes place at Burlington House and online via Zoom between 5 and 6:30pm. Full details here.

The GA: Student Symposium will be held at Burlington House and online via zoom on 19th May. The student symposium is a fantastic opportunity to hear from the geoscience pioneers of the future. This year’s theme is ‘Applying geoscience to societies challenges: What difference does your research make?’ which is particularly relevant to our membership. Registration is £20 or free for GA or GSL students.

Early bird tickets for SPNHC 2023 have passed, but there is still full-price availability. The 38th Annual Meeting of The Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections is being held in San Francisco, California from 28th May – 2th June 2023. Full details can be found here.

The Mineralogical Society’s AMG 60th Anniversary Meeting has been cancelled. Full refunds for this event, due to take place in St Andrews, Scotland on 30–31st May 2023 will be issued.

The Yorkshire Fossil Festival is taking place on the weekend of 10th and 11th June.

The Geological Society’s Annual General Meeting 2023 will be held on *Wednesday 14th June 11-12:30pm. More details here. *Note there are a number of dates on the page, but the Zoom link is for 14th June so I am running with that one. Please do share with membership if you can confirm a different date.

Registration is now open for the 2023 PalAss Annual Meeting in Cambridge from 11th-15th September. Early-Bird registration and abstract submission is 9th June. For full details of the programme explore conference site here.

Remember to check your local geology group’s websites for information of upcoming talks and events, and feel free to share them on the mailing list or blog comments.

Journals

The Museum and Society Journal are requesting submissions for their July 2024 special issue, Mobilising Museum Minerals: Critical Approaches to Mineralogical Collections. The deadline for 500 word abstracts is May 15th 2023. Full details can be found here.
