News from the Sector – March

News from the Sector is a monthly blog series featuring the latest geological and palaeontological news, jobs, exhibitions, and conferences. Conferences and Events

GCG Member Roy Starkey is running a short presentation followed by a panel discussion What should we do with our collections? Special event on Zoom on Wednesday 19th April at 8pm. There are still places available, contact Roy at talks@russellsoc.org to join in.

The annual Lyme Regis Fossil Festival will take place over the final weekend of this month, 29th and 30th April.

If that’s not enough, the Yorkshire Fossil Festival will be hot on its heels, taking place on 10th and 11th June.

Early bird tickets for SPNHC 2023 close on 15th April. The 38th Annual Meeting of The Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections is being held in San Francisco, California from 28th May to 2th June 2023. Full details can be found here.

Early bird tickets for the The Mineralogical Society’s AMG 60th Anniversary also close on 15th April. This meeting takes place in St Andrews, Scotland on 30–31st May 2023

Remember to check your local geology group’s websites for information of upcoming talks and events, and feel free to share them on the mailing list or blog comments.

Exhibitions

The Lapworth Museum’s temporary exhibition on the life and archive of John Lapworth, Unlocking Lapworth’s Legacy, ends on 30th April.

The BBC Earth Experience opened on 30th March at the Daikin Centre, Earl’s Court, London.

Titanosaur: Life as the Biggest Dinosaur opened at the Natural History Museum on Friday 31st March 2023. Tickets cost £16 and the exhibition runs until 7th January 2024.

Field Trips

The Geologist’s Assocication are running an accessible field trip to Milton Keynes to look at Jurassic and Quaternary deposits on Saturday 15th April. Their May field trip to Pembrokeshire is fully booked, but you can be placed on a waiting list. Details of both here.

The UK Association of Fossil Hunters are running fossil hunting trips in March and May. Each month they will visit two classic fossil localities, one on the South coast and one in South Wales.

The Etches collection will be running a tour of Kimmeridge Bay on 23rd April. Book here.
